Under the Tree is a 2017 Icelandic the theater film directed by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigursson. It was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. It has the escalating, claustrophobic structure of the darkest irrationality, but humor doesnt pile taking place in Under the Tree as a consequences much as it bleeds out. In the course of Icelandic writer-director Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdssons memorably unpleasant third feature, savage black comedy passes vis–vis imperceptibly into shocked, brute tragedy once a giggle turning in the throat and coming out as a choke. Charting an initially familiar fight of across-the-fence attrition along with bad neighbors in agreeable surroundings, Sigurdsson gradually takes petty bourgeois tensions to alien, gasp-worthy extremes; what the film occasionally lacks in human finesse, it makes occurring for in sheer all-goes resolve. The bleakness of its blackness might not portend a major crossover hit, but upon the strength of both its universality and its singular Scandi irony, Under the Tree should whisk on its branches into international arthouses.
